2010 CEM Award of Excellence, Municipal and Water Technology Category. KGS Acres Ltd. was awarded the 2010 CEM Award of Excellence in the Municipal and Water Technology category for their engineering of the Pointe du Bois Wastewater Collection System Renewal Project. Despite several rehabilitative upgrades, Pointe du Bois’ aging wastewater collection system became hydraulically overloaded due to excessive groundwater infiltration during spring melt periods and heavy rain events. Manitoba Hydro retained KGS Acres to develop a permanent solution that managed environmental impact, while minimizing capital costs and maintenance.  KGS Acres’ unique solution retrofitted the existing gravity sewer by incorporating it as a protective encasement and alignment for the new Low Pressure Sewer system. The project reduced wastewater flows to the system by 90%.  Pointe du Bois is now home to Manitoba’s largest grinder-pump equipped Low Pressure Sewer system.

2009 CEM Keystone Award. KGS Acres Ltd. was awarded the 2009 CEM Award of Excellence in the Infrastructure and Transportation category as well as the Keystone Award (overall highest rated project submission) for their design study of PR 313, a parkway into the northern parts of the Whiteshell Provincial Park and the only access route to Pointe du Bois Generating Station. The design study investigated upgrade alternatives for a 10 kilometre segment of the road. The project team developed six unique realignment alternatives in an extremely challenging timeframe. The aggressive project schedule was only achievable by using a 3 dimensional digital terrain model of the study area’s irregular topography from a light detection and ranging (LiDAR) survey using fixed-wing aircraft mounted with remote sensing LiDAR instrumentation. LiDAR created a database of 61 million geodetic points. An electromagnetic induction (EMI) survey was also conducted to classify soil materials along the route.
