Our History

Four founders seated at a table
1986

Four engineers – Demetrios Kontzamanis, Helmut Graumann, J. Bert Smith and Dave MacMillan – set out to build an engineering firm driven by a singular, shared conviction: that excellence is custom-made, and custom-made is personal.

July 1986

Operating from a downtown Winnipeg office, we secured our very first project with Boise Cascade at the Kenora and Fort Frances Pulp and Paper Mills. Around this time, we officially became KGS Group, named after our founders.

With momentum growing and more work coming in, we moved to the third floor of 1565 Willson Place. In those early days, our professional “business sign” was a piece of paper taped to the door.

1987

Our first big break was a feasibility study for the rehabilitation of Lac Seul Dam for Ontario Hydro, now Ontario Power Generation (OPG). We also completed detailed design and contract administration, cementing our decades-long relationship with OPG.

1991

We purchased our own office space at 3227 Roblin Boulevard. Formerly the iconic Mattheos Restaurant, the building was a local landmark. Clients would visit and reminisce about the community they found there.

With a large portion of our work taking place in northwest Ontario, we opened our first regional office in Thunder Bay.

A floodway
April 1997

During the historic 1997 Flood of the Century, KGS Group was at the forefront of the emergency response. Following the crisis, we were selected for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity as the prime consultant to expand the Floodway over the next 17 years.

Within the remote, sub-arctic climate of the Yukon, KGS was retained for the expansion of the Mayo B Hydroelectric Facility. We entered into an early contractor involvement alliance partnership, sharing the financial risks and project rewards, a first of its kind in the Canadian hydroelectric industry.

2009

We significantly expanded our municipal, structural, and electrical capabilities in Saskatchewan by acquiring three established firms: Donovan Engineering, MR2 McDonald and Associates and EMC Engineering.

October 2022

We acquired HydroPower Performance Engineering (HPPE), a hydro turbine testing company. This significantly expanded our services, allowing us to offer these services to our clients under one coordinated team.

Our Sacramento team
August 2023

As our U.S. operations continued to generate momentum, we opened an office in Sacramento, welcoming a new team to expand our hydropower services.

November 2023

KGS Group acquired Soli Solutions – a Saskatchewan civil engineering firm specializing in the design and construction of transportation infrastructure. This acquisition was key to expanding our transportation services.

Our Founders

Dave MacMillan (back left), Helmut Graumann (back right), Demetrios Kontzamanis (front left) and J. Bert Smith (front right)

The early days required grit and determination to build and grow a new company. Ultimately, their perseverance, focus on quality and commitment to lasting relationships led to success. To this day, we remain faithful to the ideals our Founders modelled for us: we are dedicated to excellence, we have the discipline to consistently deliver KGS quality, we embrace challenges and we build lifelong relationships with our clients and our people.

Demetrios Kontzamanis

Founding Principal

Born and raised on the island of Chios, Greece, Demetrios Kontzamanis moved to North America at 18 to pursue engineering studies, eventually settling in Winnipeg, where he earned his Civil Engineering degree and Diploma in Engineering from the University of Manitoba.

From 1967 to 1986, he worked as a consulting civil (structural) engineer on major hydroelectric developments, including Manitoba Hydro’s Long Spruce and Limestone Generating Stations. As Civil Department Head, he played a pivotal role in shaping the 250 MW Nipawin Hydroelectric Project for Saskatchewan Power Corporation, creating an innovative approach to accommodate the site’s challenging shale foundation. Over his career, he became widely respected for his expertise in hydraulic gate design, contributing to projects across Canada, the U.S. and internationally.

In 1986, Demetrios co‑founded KGS Group with Helmut, Bert and Dave – an effort driven by his long‑held vision for an engineering firm built on technical excellence and client trust. As President, he was the primary force behind the company’s direction, culture and steady growth, guiding KGS from a small startup to a leading consulting engineering firm. He led the organization until his retirement in 2017 and remains proud of its continued success and evolution into Manitoba’s largest consulting engineering office.

Helmut Graumann

Founding Principal & Director

With over 40 years of experience as a professional engineer, Helmut has worked his entire career in the consulting engineering industry. Helmut specializes in structural engineering and has held roles in design, design management, and project management on industrial, commercial and heavy civil projects – including construction costs valued in the several billion dollar range.

As one of the Founding Principals of KGS Group, Helmut has played a central role in building and leading the firm’s industrial and general engineering groups since its inception in 1986. His project highlights include major industrial facilities in the ethanol, potash and pulp and paper sectors, significant municipal civil infrastructure and the design and rehabilitation of hydroelectric facilities for major utilities.

Helmut currently serves on the company’s Board of Directors and continues to support both the executive leadership team and large scale industrial projects.

J. Bert Smith

Founding Principal & Director

Bert is a Founding Principal of KGS Group with over 50 years of experience in detailed site investigation, design, and project management for hydrogeological, geotechnical and environmental projects. His expertise spans dams and other water retaining structures, bridge abutments, slope stabilization, foundation design and instrumentation. He is also adept in assessing groundwater supply and quality, geothermal applications, seepage and construction dewatering, as well as contaminant assessment, site remediation and mine reclamation.

Bert provides company oversight for staff management, design direction and review, and project management across all geotechnical, hydrogeological, environmental and geomatics projects. He also serves on the company’s Board of Directors, contributing to overall strategic and technical leadership.

Dave MacMillan

Vice-President – Hydro and Water, Founding Principal & Director

As one of the Founding Principals of KGS Group, Dave serves on both our Board of Directors and the company’s senior management team. Backed by over 40 years of experience, he is responsible for hydroelectric and water resource projects across the firm. His work includes project management, planning studies, design supervision, dam safety and navigating design and regulatory approvals for hydroelectric, flood control and major infrastructure projects.

Over the course of his career, Dave has led several significant projects, including the Pointe du Bois Unit 1 Upgrade, the Pointe du Bois Spillway Replacement Project, the Mayo B Hydroelectric Project Expansion and the Winnipeg Floodway Expansion. He is currently overseeing the execution of the $250 million Lake St. Martin Flood Channel project, now in the detailed design phase and scheduled for construction in 2027.
