Rick Martin, B.Sc., P.Eng.

President & Principal

Since joining KGS Group in 1988, Rick has taken on roles of increasing responsibility, culminating in his appointment as Chairman and President in 2016.

With nearly four decades of consulting engineering experience, Rick has developed deep expertise as a lead structural engineer and project manager on large-scale heavy industrial, hydroelectric and infrastructure projects. He has played a key role in the successful delivery of numerous alternate delivery projects and was instrumental in developing the quality management system that underpins our reputation for industry leading deliverables.

As President and Principal, Rick oversees all KGS Group operations and champions our core value of building long term relationships with our clients and people.

Dennis Sierhuis, CPA, CA

Director – Corporate Finance

With over 25 years of experience across finance and administration, sales and general management, human resources and operational management, Dennis brings a versatile CPA CA background to his role at KGS. He is responsible for all finance and accounting functions, working closely with senior management and external partners to ensure timely and accurate financial reporting, GAAP compliance and effective leadership of our accounting team.

A graduate of the University of Manitoba with a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Commerce (Honours), Dennis brings broad business acumen to his role. He excels at building productive working relationships with staff and clients and setting clear organizational goals – skills that support efficient operations across the company

Eric Smith, M.Asc., P.Eng.

Director – Technology

Eric provides strategic leadership and oversight for our information technology environment. He is responsible for aligning technology services and digital adoption with business goals while ensuring secure, reliable and efficient operations across a multidisciplinary professional services organization.

With more than 20 years of experience and formal training in computer engineering, Eric brings a diverse background to KGS, spanning consulting, project management, system and software engineering and business development. This depth of experience enables him to deliver practical, technology leadership that supports operational reliability and effective risk management.

Lisa Fraser, BA, MA

Director – Marketing and Communications

Lisa is a seasoned professional with more than 20 years of experience in communications, marketing, media relations and public information. She leads all marketing and communications strategy and execution for KGS across North America. Throughout her career, Lisa has held senior roles in regulatory, government and consulting environments, bringing a practical, strategic and collaborative approach to her work.

Nicole Ritchie, BBA, CPHR

Director – Human Resources

As KGS Group’s Director of Human Resources, Nicole is an integral part of our growth and people management. She oversees all HR functions, focusing on attracting, retaining and developing top talent while fostering long-term relationships with employees.

Her expertise includes employee relations, talent acquisition, onboarding, engagement and performance management. Nicole holds a Bachelor of Business Administration and is a Chartered Professional in Human Resources (CPHR).

Ruth Ola, M.Sc., PMP, CMQ/OE

Director – Integrated Management System & Director

Ruth oversees KGS Group’s Integrated Management System and brings extensive expertise in developing, implementing, and optimizing quality and organizational processes. A certified Project Management Professional (PMP) and Certified Manager of Quality and Organizational Excellence (CMQ/OE), she collaborates closely with senior leadership to champion continuous improvement, lean methodologies, organizational process design and strategic planning.

A Senior Member of the American Society for Quality (ASQ) and former Section Chair of ASQ Manitoba, Ruth has a long-standing commitment to advancing quality management within the profession. She previously served on the Board of Governors for Red River College Polytechnic and is currently a member of the Board of Directors at KGS Group. Ruth holds an MBA and began her career as a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) professional, bringing a strong analytical foundation to her leadership approach.

Vanessa Mulhern, B.Comm.(Hons), LL.B.

Director – Corporate Legal and General Counsel

Vanessa brings a strong interdisciplinary background in law and business to her role, pairing legal expertise with a strategic understanding of organizational needs. With degrees in both fields, she is well-equipped to navigate the complex legal landscape of the engineering consulting industry.

Before joining KGS Group, Vanessa practiced as a corporate commercial lawyer, developing extensive experience in corporate governance and structures, mergers and acquisitions, and business contracts. This foundation enables her to approach legal matters with both technical precision and practical insight.

At KGS, Vanessa oversees a broad range of legal functions, including contract negotiations, claims management, corporate governance and employment law. Her strategic, solutions‑focused approach helps mitigate risk while aligning with the company’s broader business objectives. Whether managing disputes, ensuring compliance or drafting complex agreements, Vanessa provides practical legal solutions that drive business growth and protect the company’s interests, while contributing to its long‑term success in a rapidly evolving marketplace.

Adam Pawlikewich, B.Sc., P.Eng., FEC

Principal – Power and Energy

As a Principal at KGS Group, Adam has over 25 years of electrical engineering expertise. He oversees project management and electrical design for largescale multi-discipline industrial, hydroelectric and institutional projects, focusing on utility and energy clients. He has also been instrumental in the development of BIM/4D design tools and model coordination at KGS.

Adam’s technical experience spans power generation and storage, AC & DC station service, instrumentation and controls, station design, specialty fire protection, physical security, PLC/DCS/SCADA automation and control, LV/MV power distribution and hydraulic turbine generators, including greenfield design and in-place operating plant upgrades.

Aryian Farahani, B.Eng., P.Eng.

Director – Transportation

With nearly two decades of experience in transportation engineering and heavy civil construction, Aryian offers a depth of knowledge shaped by both entrepreneurial leadership and extensive project experience. He is the former founder and principal of Soli Solutions Inc., a Saskatchewan-based transportation consulting firm that specialized in roadway design and construction, which was acquired by KGS Group in November 2023.

Before joining KGS, Aryian’s work focused primarily on the detailed design and construction management of roadways and associated infrastructure throughout the prairie’s region.

Bonnie Hoffensetz, M.Sc.

Associate Principal & Director – Environment (East Region)

Bonnie has over 25 years of experience in the environmental consulting industry, working across Western Canada and Ontario. She leads the Environmental Department in our Winnipeg office, where she supports a diverse portfolio of environmental projects for both private and public sector clients.

In her role, Bonnie manages and mentors staff, delegates project work, provides strategic guidance and senior technical input. She also oversees several multidisciplinary standing offer contracts and maintains strong relationships with clients through effective coordination and project oversight. Her expertise includes contaminated site assessment, remediation and long-term remedial monitoring programs, as well as hazardous materials assessment and emergency spill response.

Brian Peter, B.Sc., P.Eng.

Principal – Hydro Project Delivery

Brian Peter is a Principal at KGS Group responsible for the Hydro Project Delivery Department, leading teams in major hydroelectric and water infrastructure projects across Manitoba, Ontario and beyond. Brian has over 38 years of experience in project management, hydroelectric development, dam safety, flood protection, and large-scale infrastructure design and construction.

Through nearly two decades with KGS Group, he has led some of the firm's most complex assignments, including the Pointe du Bois Spillway Replacement Project, major OPG dam safety initiatives at Little Long and Smokey Falls and work on the Niagara Power Canal and Moose River Basin Greenfield Hydro projects.

Brian focuses on delivering consistent, high-quality project execution while developing and mentoring the next generation of project managers and technical leaders. His priority is building strong client relationships and guiding multidisciplinary teams through challenging, high impact hydro projects.

Bruce Belmore, P.Eng., PTOE, VMA

Principal – Transportation & Director

Bruce Belmore brings more than 35 years of leadership and technical expertise in the transportation industry. His professional interests include transportation systems planning, traffic network capacity and road safety – areas in which he has consistently advanced innovative and practical solutions.

Bruce has served the transportation community at the highest levels as both the Canadian and International President of the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE), a global organization dedicated to developing safe and efficient transportation solutions. He has also contributed to the next generation of engineering professionals as an adjunct professor at the University of Regina, where he has lectured in Engineering Law and Ethics. Bruce is certified as a Professional Traffic Operations Engineer (PTOE) and is an experienced facilitator in value engineering analysis.

In recognition of his significant contributions to the profession, Bruce has been bestowed with the H. Robert Burton Distinguished Service Award from ITE Canada and the Nelson J. Shaffer Distinguished Consultant Award from ITE International. He has also been named an Honorary Member of ITE International – the organization’s highest distinction, recognizing exceptional and enduring professional achievement. 

Bruce also serves as a member on our Board of Directors.

Colin Siepman, B.Sc. CE, M.Eng., P.Eng.

Principal – Project & Business Services

Colin has over 30 years of experience in planning, design, inspection and contract administration for a wide range of infrastructure and structural projects. As a senior structural engineer, he is well versed in infrastructure assessment and rehabilitation. He also has extensive project management experience, including scheduling, cost estimating, multidisciplinary coordination, benefit–cost analysis and public consultation for projects valued up to $500 million+.

His infrastructure background includes diversion channels, dikes, water control structures, gates, cofferdams, flood pumping stations, hydroelectric generating stations, dam safety projects, reservoirs and water treatment facilities. His other expertise extends to bridges, roadways and transmission structure projects.

Colin’s building structure portfolio spans light commercial developments to heavy industrial facilities, including steel rolling mills, food processing plants, grain handling operations and pulp and paper facilities. He also has specialized expertise in the design of braced excavations, retaining walls, lifting devices and fall‑protection systems.

In addition to overseeing complex engineering projects, Colin provides strategic leadership and oversight for project delivery and business operations. He drives business development initiatives, improves operational efficiency and mentors multidisciplinary teams to support the company's goals.

Dave MacMillan, M.Eng., P.Eng.

Vice-President – Hydro and Water, Founding Principal & Director

As one of the Founding Principals of KGS Group, Dave serves on both our Board of Directors and the company’s senior management team. Backed by over 40 years of experience, he is responsible for hydroelectric and water resource projects across the firm. His work includes project management, planning studies, design supervision, dam safety and navigating design and regulatory approvals for hydroelectric, flood control and major infrastructure projects.

Over the course of his career, Dave has led several significant projects, including the Pointe du Bois Unit 1 Upgrade, the Pointe du Bois Spillway Replacement Project, the Mayo B Hydroelectric Project Expansion and the Winnipeg Floodway Expansion. He is currently overseeing the execution of the $250 million Lake St. Martin Flood Channel project, now in the detailed design phase and scheduled for construction in 2027.

Dami Adedapo, PhD, P.Eng.

Principal – Dam Safety

With over 25 years of experience in geotechnical, earthquake and dam safety engineering, Dami drives our projects forward with his intricate knowledge of what our clients need. He provides strategic guidance on constructability, risk management and design for complex projects from feasibility through execution, including hydropower, flood control, mine remediation and closure, dam safety and municipal infrastructure.

In addition to his extensive project management, Dami’s technical experience includes site characterization, instrumentation, advanced numerical modelling, embankment and foundation design, slope stabilization and dynamic soil-structure interaction. He has also performed dam safety reviews, failure mode analysis, trenchless technologies and tunnel design, cofferdams and seepage control, liquefaction and seismic hazard assessments.

David S. Brown, M.Eng., P.Eng.

Principal – Water Management and Municipal Infrastructure

With more than 25 years of experience, Dave leads our water resources and municipal infrastructure teams. He brings deep expertise in the design, analysis and implementation of complex water resource and hydrologic/hydraulic projects, ranging from flood protection and dam safety analysis to hydroelectric generating station design. His experience includes bridge and culvert design, river engineering, flood forecasting and floodplain mapping. He also specializes in fish passage and habitat enhancement, erosion and sediment control, and environmental assessments.

As Principal‑in‑Charge on numerous municipal water resources projects, Dave has supported communities in improving drainage, strengthening stormwater systems and planning resilient water infrastructure.

He is passionate about advancing the industry as a whole through his past involvement with the Canadian Water Resources Association and ongoing contributions to the Canadian Dam Association.

Gord McPhail, M.Sc., P.Eng.

Principal – Hydro Structural

Gord is a specialist engineer with over 35 years of experience in structural and hydraulic design, project planning, environmental approvals, and the life extension of water control structures and hydroelectric facilities. Throughout his career, he has served as both project manager and technical lead on major dam, spillway, canal, penstock and hydroelectric projects across Canada and the United States.

As head of the hydro structural group in Winnipeg, Gord leads the planning and design of hydroelectric developments, hydraulic and water control structures, and the rehabilitation and life extension of aging infrastructure and flow control systems. He is also involved in several owner’s engineer water resource and hydro projects across North America, providing guidance that supports safe, reliable and sustainable operation.

Hugh Williams, B.Sc., P.Eng.

Principal – Industrial and Buildings & Spaces

Hugh Williams is a Principal and Senior Mechanical Engineer at KGS Group, bringing over 30 years of experience in the consulting engineering industry. He has led and contributed to the design, design management, project management, procurement and construction administration of multidisciplinary projects ranging from small-scale developments to large, complex initiatives.

Hugh leads the Industrial and Buildings and Spaces market sector and is Principal-in-Charge of KGS Group’s Health & Safety program.

Jason Mann, M.Sc., P.Geo., FGC

Principal – Environment

With over 27 years of geoscience experience, Jason supports our environmental, ecology and environmental impact assessment, and geomatics (GIS) groups across the company, with a particular focus on the growth and oversight of the environmental and GIS teams in Winnipeg. He also contributes to various initiatives related to our work with Indigenous partners, including service on the board of Ganawendan Aki.

Jason has worked on projects across a wide geographic range, from South America to the Arctic. He is highly skilled in aerial photography interpretation and mapping, as well as the design and execution of hydrogeological and environmental investigation and remediation projects. In addition, he provides technical input for large-scale multidisciplinary projects, including flood control, hydroelectric, solid waste, mine closure, and industrial and institutional projects.

A leader in advancing 3D geological and hydrogeological modelling at KGS Group, Jason has also provided peer review and technical representation for municipalities, hydropower developers, and First Nations groups, including within environmental hearing and licensing processes. He contributes extensively to the professional community, having served as Councillor and President of Engineers Geoscientists Manitoba. He currently is serving as the Manitoba director on the Geoscience Canada Board and continues with a role on the executive of the board for the Tunnelling Association of Canada.

Lee Peters, M.Eng., P.Eng., PMP

Associate Principal, Director – Environment (West Region) & Director

With more than 25 years of experience, Lee is a senior environmental engineer who leads our Saskatchewan Environmental Department, serves as a Director of Environmental Services for the West Region, supporting teams from British Columbia to Saskatchewan, and serves on the company’s Board of Directors. Her background includes extensive field work, data analysis and interpretation, and reporting for a wide range of environmental and hydrogeological projects. Prior to her consulting role, she worked in industrial and process water treatment, primarily focusing on mining operations.

A certified Project Management Professional (PMP), Lee plays key project management roles within the company. Her expertise spans hydrogeological studies and groundwater investigations, contaminated site assessments, corrective action planning, greenhouse gas assessment and reduction, emissions reporting, climate lens assessments, solid waste management and environmental impact assessments. She is also skilled in spill emergency response, contract and construction administration, regulatory permitting and compliance and personnel management.

Lee actively contributes to the engineering community through her involvement on various committees with the Saskatchewan Association of Consulting Engineering Companies and the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists.

Nathan Ruecker, B.Sc., P.Eng.

Transportation Market Director

Nathan has over 20 years of experience delivering transportation infrastructure projects. Over the past decade, his work has focused on design and construction delivery, with a strong emphasis on quality laboratory services. His technical expertise spans project management, highway and roadway planning and design (including associated utilities), construction administration and tender services, materials testing and municipal infrastructure.

As Market Director – Transportation, Nathan leads executive-level client relationships, market planning and business development, working across regions and disciplines to deliver integrated solutions for complex transportation and infrastructure programs. He provides strategic direction for market growth while ensuring alignment between client needs, organizational strategy and service delivery teams. 

Nathan is recognized for translating data and operational insight into strategic decisions that strengthen market presence, optimize resource deployment and support growth. He is deeply committed to mentorship and talent development, building high-performing teams and developing future market and technical leaders across the organization.

Ray Offman, M.Sc., P.Eng.

Director – Municipal Infrastructure

With over 25 years in management and extensive design and project delivery experience, Ray has a broad base of expertise across civil/municipal, geotechnical and transportation engineering. He leads our Manitoba and Ontario municipal teams, while providing technical leadership for municipal projects across all our locations.

Ray’s experience spans project management, budgeting and resource planning, conceptual and preliminary design, options analysis, risk assessment, public engagement, detailed design, cost estimating and construction administration for a wide range of projects, with a focus on urban infrastructure.

Sean Bayer, M.Eng., P.Eng., PMP

Associate Principal & Director – Municipal Infrastructure

Sean has over 28 years of experience in regulatory work, civil engineering, sales and consulting for a wide range of clients. He oversees our Saskatchewan municipal group and supports municipal market expansion into Alberta as Enterprise Lead, providing leadership across multidisciplinary water, wastewater and civil infrastructure projects.

Working alongside his team, Sean specializes in small to large water treatment, wastewater treatment, servicing, water distribution, wastewater collection and civil engineering development projects. He supports municipal clients ranging from hamlets to major cities, as well as institutional, crown corporations and private‑sector clients. Sean provides project management and civil engineering design services, along with coordination and technical support to other departments across the firm.

Sean also contributes to the broader consulting community through his involvement with ACEC‑Saskatchewan, where he serves as the Environment and Water Resource Chair.

Stefan Kohnen, MBA, P.Eng.

Principal – Hydro Asset Management

Stefan Kohnen has 38 years experience as a business manager, project manager and mechanical engineer in the hydropower and manufacturing industries. He is a subject matter expert on hydropower development with a focus on site development and turbine expertise.

As the Principal for Hydro Asset Management, Mr. Kohnen is responsible for the development of markets, supporting projects and developing related business strategies. He has been involved in either the development and/or the implementation of 20 generating stations in Canada, the United States and around the world and is a subject matter expert in the area of greenfield and brownfield hydropower development. He has published articles and made numerous presentations on the topic of optimizing site development and related topics.

Regional Leadership

Amy Deakyne, PE, LEED AP

Regional Director, California

Amy leads our Sacramento office and oversees a multidisciplinary team of engineers delivering complex hydro and dam infrastructure projects. Backed by 20 years hydropower industry, she leverages her experience supported by her architectural engineering degree from California Polytechnic State University to drive our work forward in this region.

Her structural engineering background spans dam safety reviews, asset management, structural analysis and design, project management and construction oversight for projects of all sizes. Amy is also an active contributor to key industry organizations, including the National Hydropower Association, ASDSO and CEATI.

Andrew Born, B.Sc., P.Eng.

Regional Manager, Vancouver

Andrew is a mechanical engineer and project manager with more than 20 years of experience in consulting engineering. He has contributed to several large-scale projects throughout Western Canada for clients in the energy, infrastructure and industrial sectors.

Andrew’s experience spans a wide range of industrial and processing environments, including power generation stations, oil and gas processing plants, mining facilities and heavy industrial operations. He has also worked extensively in chemical, pharmaceutical and food processing settings. Throughout his career, Andrew has been involved with every phase of the project life cycle – from preliminary design through to commissioning and startup. His deep understanding of national building codes and piping design standards enables him to effectively lead complex technical projects.

As Regional Manager of our Vancouver office, Andrew oversees day‑to‑day operations and leads strategic initiatives to expand our services and project footprint across the region.

Andi Bogdanovic, M.Sc., P.E., P.Eng.

U.S. General Manager

With nearly 25 years of project management and civil/structural engineering experience, Andi specializes in hydropower, dams, heavy industrial projects and marine facilities. He has a comprehensive understanding of North American design standards, codes and guidelines, and a demonstrated ability for delivering cost effective, constructible solutions on complex, multidisciplinary projects.

Andi specializes in complex structural analysis, dam safety, seismic evaluation, and FEA modeling for powerhouse superstructures, crane upgrades and monorails, new gantry and crane structures, and major hydroelectric facility rehabilitation and life‑extension projects. He is also an approved FERC Part 12D Independent Consultant (IC) with extensive experience in PFMA, FMEA, SQRA and risk‑based dam safety assessments.

Dino Philopoulos, M.Sc., FEC, P.Eng.

Associate Principal, Regional Manager, Saskatchewan & Director

Dino began his career in 2002 at the University of Manitoba as a researcher and lecturer while completing his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in civil engineering. In 2007, he made Saskatchewan his permanent home and shifted his focus to consulting engineering, joining our Regina office in 2008.

With expertise in structural design, construction services, project management, contract administration and the rehabilitation and long term management of structural assets, Dino brings a versatile skillset to his work. His project experience spans heavy industrial plants, mining facilities, civil and bridge structures, health and educational facilities, commercial buildings, telecommunications structures and real time structural monitoring. In 2020, he was honoured with the Engineers Canada Fellowship for his contributions to advancing the engineering profession in Canada.

Dino currently oversees our Regina and Saskatoon Operations and also serves as a member on our Board of Directors.

Nathan Rockwood, PE, SE

Regional Director, Washington

With more than 25 years of civil and structural engineering experience, Nathan specializes in the design and construction of hydraulic structures, with a focus in seismic design. His expertise includes structural design for hydroelectric facilities, pump stations, water control structures, intakes, outlet works and control buildings.

Nathan is a trusted advisor to regulated utilities, public agencies and water and irrigation districts, and has built long‑standing relationships with hydropower clients across the West Coast. He has led multidisciplinary teams providing responsive leadership through on-call type contracts for utilities and public agencies. His commitment to the industry is reflected in his leadership as past president of the Northwest Hydroelectric Association (NWHA). He is also active with the National Hydropower Association (NHA), ASDSO and USSD.

As Regional Director, Nathan oversees our Seattle office and leads a multidisciplinary team of engineers. His responsibilities include day‑to‑day staff management as well as business development activities throughout the Pacific Northwest.

Peter Hassan, M.Asc., P.Eng.

Regional Manager, Mississauga

Peter has over 35 years of hydropower engineering experience, with a strong foundation in civil-geotechnical work and significant experience in the assessment and performance monitoring of dams.

In addition to his technical expertise, Peter has contributed to major hydroelectric rehabilitation and new construction projects, applying his deep knowledge of structural integrity and risk management.

As a senior leader, Peter has managed multidisciplinary engineering teams delivering services across broad geographic regions. He has led operational support efforts, overseen work on major projects and participated in safety assessments of hydroelectric, thermal and nuclear waste facilities.

As the Regional Manager for our Mississauga office, Peter manages the Mississauga team and fosters client relationships, enabling KGS to deliver technical excellence in the region.

Tony Gallo, M.Sc., P.Biol. EP

Regional Manager, Thunder Bay

Tony is a senior environmental scientist with 30 years of experience in environmental assessment and remediation. He has an extensive track record delivering a wide range of environmental projects and is recognized as a trusted expert in his field.

Tony’s experience spans Phase 1 to Phase IV remedial action and plans, hydrogeologic and hydrologic investigations, screening‑level human and ecological risk assessments, environmental licensing and permitting, and terrestrial and aquatic inventories. Throughout his career, he has worked with various private, government and industrial clients.

As Regional Manager and Environmental Department Head, Tony leads the management and growth of our Thunder Bay office and oversees all operations of the environmental group

Dave MacMillan, M.Eng., P.Eng.

Vice-President – Hydro and Water, Founding Principal & Director

As one of the Founding Principals of KGS Group, Dave serves on both our Board of Directors and the company’s senior management team. Backed by over 40 years of experience, he is responsible for hydroelectric and water resource projects across the firm. His work includes project management, planning studies, design supervision, dam safety and navigating design and regulatory approvals for hydroelectric, flood control and major infrastructure projects.

Over the course of his career, Dave has led several significant projects, including the Pointe du Bois Unit 1 Upgrade, the Pointe du Bois Spillway Replacement Project, the Mayo B Hydroelectric Project Expansion and the Winnipeg Floodway Expansion. He is currently overseeing the execution of the $250 million Lake St. Martin Flood Channel project, now in the detailed design phase and scheduled for construction in 2027.

Dino Philopoulos, M.Sc., FEC, P.Eng.

Associate Principal, Regional Manager, Saskatchewan & Director

Dino began his career in 2002 at the University of Manitoba as a researcher and lecturer while completing his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in civil engineering. In 2007, he made Saskatchewan his permanent home and shifted his focus to consulting engineering, joining our Regina office in 2008.

With expertise in structural design, construction services, project management, contract administration and the rehabilitation and long term management of structural assets, Dino brings a versatile skillset to his work. His project experience spans heavy industrial plants, mining facilities, civil and bridge structures, health and educational facilities, commercial buildings, telecommunications structures and real time structural monitoring. In 2020, he was honoured with the Engineers Canada Fellowship for his contributions to advancing the engineering profession in Canada.

Dino currently oversees our Regina and Saskatoon Operations and also serves as a member on our Board of Directors.

Helmut Graumann, B.Sc., P.Eng.

Founding Principal & Director

With over 40 years of experience as a professional engineer, Helmut has worked his entire career in the consulting engineering industry. Helmut specializes in structural engineering and has held roles in design, design management, and project management on industrial, commercial and heavy civil projects – including construction costs valued in the several billion dollar range.

As one of the Founding Principals of KGS Group, Helmut has played a central role in building and leading the firm’s industrial and general engineering groups since its inception in 1986. His project highlights include major industrial facilities in the ethanol, potash and pulp and paper sectors, significant municipal civil infrastructure and the design and rehabilitation of hydroelectric facilities for major utilities.

Helmut currently serves on the company’s Board of Directors and continues to support both the executive leadership team and large scale industrial projects.

J. Bert Smith, M.Sc., P.Eng., FEC

Founding Principal & Director

Bert is a Founding Principal of KGS Group with over 50 years of experience in detailed site investigation, design, and project management for hydrogeological, geotechnical and environmental projects. His expertise spans dams and other water retaining structures, bridge abutments, slope stabilization, foundation design and instrumentation. He is also adept in assessing groundwater supply and quality, geothermal applications, seepage and construction dewatering, as well as contaminant assessment, site remediation and mine reclamation.

Bert provides company oversight for staff management, design direction and review, and project management across all geotechnical, hydrogeological, environmental and geomatics projects. He also serves on the company’s Board of Directors, contributing to overall strategic and technical leadership.

Lee Peters, M.Eng., P.Eng., PMP

Associate Principal, Director – Environment (West Region) & Director

With more than 25 years of experience, Lee is a senior environmental engineer who leads our Saskatchewan Environmental Department, serves as a Director of Environmental Services for the West Region, supporting teams from British Columbia to Saskatchewan, and serves on the company’s Board of Directors. Her background includes extensive field work, data analysis and interpretation, and reporting for a wide range of environmental and hydrogeological projects. Prior to her consulting role, she worked in industrial and process water treatment, primarily focusing on mining operations.

A certified Project Management Professional (PMP), Lee plays key project management roles within the company. Her expertise spans hydrogeological studies and groundwater investigations, contaminated site assessments, corrective action planning, greenhouse gas assessment and reduction, emissions reporting, climate lens assessments, solid waste management and environmental impact assessments. She is also skilled in spill emergency response, contract and construction administration, regulatory permitting and compliance and personnel management.

Lee actively contributes to the engineering community through her involvement on various committees with the Saskatchewan Association of Consulting Engineering Companies and the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists.

Nicholas Kaminski, M.Eng., PMP, P.Eng.

Structural Department Head & Director

Nicholas has over 12 years of practice in structural engineering design and project management across industrial, municipal infrastructure, institutional and commercial sectors. He has extensive experience performing structural inspections, site work, contract administration and the evaluation of new and existing structures.

Before joining KGS, Nicholas practiced with a heavy industrial contractor in the oilsands and energy sector, gaining valuable insight into large-scale and complex project delivery. Since then, he has continued to expand his leadership responsibilities at KGS and currently serves as a member of our Board of Directors. He holds a Project Management Professional designation along with several governance qualifications and is an ICD.D candidate. He also serves as a Board Director with Montessori School of Regina and as President-Elect of APEGS.

Ruth Ola, M.Sc., PMP, CMQ/OE

Director – Integrated Management System & Director

Ruth oversees KGS Group’s Integrated Management System and brings extensive expertise in developing, implementing, and optimizing quality and organizational processes. A certified Project Management Professional (PMP) and Certified Manager of Quality and Organizational Excellence (CMQ/OE), she collaborates closely with senior leadership to champion continuous improvement, lean methodologies, organizational process design and strategic planning.

A Senior Member of the American Society for Quality (ASQ) and former Section Chair of ASQ Manitoba, Ruth has a long-standing commitment to advancing quality management within the profession. She previously served on the Board of Governors for Red River College Polytechnic and is currently a member of the Board of Directors at KGS Group. Ruth holds an MBA and began her career as a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) professional, bringing a strong analytical foundation to her leadership approach.
