Civil Engineering Technologist (Geotechnical)
KGS Group is seeking an ambitious and motivated Civil Engineering Technologist to join our established Geotechnical team of geotechnical engineers, technologists and drafters in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

The Role
As a Civil Engineering Technologist in our Geotechnical group at KGS Group, you will have the opportunity to:
- Collaborate and learn from a committed team of technologists and engineers with wide range of experience and diverse expertise.
- Complete work on sites located across the province and Canada including remote sites. Access to most sites is by regular car or truck, however some sites are accessible only by boat, plane, or helicopter
- Perform geotechnical investigations including subsurface drilling, coring, test pitting and instrument installations.
- Conduct site investigations, and be responsible for:
- Completing utility locates.
- Writing traffic control plans and arranging for signage and/or traffic control.
- Scheduling and coordinating exploration subcontractors and private locators, often for various projects at the same time.
- Coordinating and communicating with clients and property owners for on-site activities.
- Log soil, rock and subsurface conditions including soil type, moisture and groundwater conditions.
- Collect disturbed and undisturbed soil samples, conduct proper soil sampling practices and coordinate laboratory testing (by others).
- Carryout onsite field testing including Standard Penetration Testing (SPTs), Cone Penetration Testing (CPT), Pressuremeter, Torvane and Field Vane Testing, and Density Testing using nuclear densometer.
- Instrument installations including: slope inclinometers for monitoring slope movement; and Casagrande tip, standpipe and vibrating wire piezometers for monitoring groundwater levels.
- Install dataloggers, and setup automated data acquisition systems for remote collection of digital data.
- Complete follow-up measurements of groundwater and slope monitoring instrumentation.
- Complete inspections for foundations preparations, base and subbase placement, earthworks, foundations installations, and other various construction activities on dams, dikes, canals, water control structures, closed mine sites, quarries, trenchless conduit projects, rock support, and riverbank works which can include erosion protection, bank regrading/offloading, and trench or stone column shear keys.
- For an interested candidate, learn to perform specialized subsurface in-situ soil testing such as Piezo Cone Penetrometer with pore pressure measurements (CPTu) and pressure meter testing.
- Support emergency and rapid-response activities such as flooding, failures and forensics across Canada.
- Support survey crews and/or develop independent survey skills as required.
About You
Qualifications of an interested candidate are as follows:
- Completion of a civil engineering technology program.
- Have excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Work efficiently and effectively with little supervision, both individually and with a team.
- Have an above average technical aptitude and a desire to further develop technical knowledge.
- Willingness to continue to develop and learn new software programs.
- Field work will require completing tasks in all weather conditions, in areas of remote and rough terrain, using equipment that may require lifting or moving 50 pounds without assistance.
- Be committed to Quality Assurance and have a keen awareness of safety 24/7, not just at work.
- Be willing to travel for work outside the City of Winnipeg for both short- and long-term assignments. At times, this can mean working independently and/or include travel to northern and remote regions.
- Willing and able to work extended hours, as needed, to complete projects or meet deadlines.
- Must hold a valid class 5 driver’s license and will be required to operate standard and ATV/UTV vehicles on behalf of the company.
