Electrical Draft Designer

The Role
The Electrical Draft Designer will work in a team environmental to prepare electrical engineering designs and related documents. You will work on assigned projects under the guidance of Intermediate to Senior level Engineers while collaborating with engineers and designers from other disciplines. Working in a team environment, you will ensure projects are completed within allotted schedules and budgets, and up to high quality standards.
Other responsibilities include electrical assessments of commercial buildings and detailed design of electrical systems in renovated or new buildings. There will also be opportunities to take on project management responsibilities, including proposal writing and monitoring budgets if desired.
You will gain valuable experience in commercial building systems including power distribution, lighting and controls, fire alarm, communications and security. You will assist in creating and performing changes to drawings in both 2D plans in AutoCAD and 3D models in Revit. A good working knowledge of AutoCAD and Revit is required.
Your Key Responsibilities:
- Participate in commercial electrical design including multi-discipline projects from the proposal stage through to completion, including establishment and maintenance of project budgets and schedules
- Provide electrical design drafting of small to large commercial projects.
- Design and draft in AutoCAD, and Revit. On-the-job training will be provided however experience would be considered an asset.
- Collect, study and combine field information and initial design ideas from engineers into coherent technical drafts for further study and review by lead engineers.
- Create accurate, detailed technical documentation based on specifications and design information provided by project managers, lead engineers or clients.
- Create as-built drawings from inspection sketches and notes.
- Design of commercial electrical systems including low-voltage power distribution, fire alarm, lighting, data cabling, surveillance and intrusion systems.
- Perform routine calculations and design as directed.
- Make equipment selections and communicate with vendors.
- Issue drawings and other documents.
- Attend site inspections as assigned for drawing compliance or data gathering.
- Complete field inspections for both the design and construction phases of the project.
- Work in a team environment and attend multi-disciplinary project meetings.
- Prepare preliminary drawings, equipment technical specifications, detail design and associated construction drawings.
- Work in a team environment with our other commercial department personnel, management, administrative staff and other drafting personnel to prepare tender and construction documents or reports.
- Assist with electrical construction administration to coordinate with contractors, review shop drawings and answer RFI’s.
About You
- Diploma in electrical design technology specializing in commercial electrical design from a recognized post-secondary institution.
- Three to five years’ experience in electrical commercial designs with demonstrated technical abilities (Revit, analysis, code and regulations reviews, design calculations, technical report writing).
- Excellent written and oral communication skills are essential.
- CET registration in Manitoba is optional. Registration in other Canadian provinces or US states would be an additional asset.
- Availability to periodically travel to project sites on an as required basis for 1/2 day or 1-day site visits, typically for data collection, review of construction or attendance at coordination or design review meetings.
- Ability to adapt to and meet the challenges of a variety of different projects from clients in many different industries.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license and the ability/willingness to undergo security clearance checks.
