Intermediate Hydro Structural Engineer
KGS Group is looking for an Intermediate Structural Engineer to join our Hydro Structural Group with 5-10 years of experience in the planning and design of water resource infrastructure, hydroelectric projects, or heavy civil construction to join our well-established, Winnipeg Office.

The Role
In this role, you’ll work in a multidisciplinary team environment in our Winnipeg office to prepare and review civil/structural engineering designs and related documents. The technical work includes working on feasibility studies, engineering designs, preparation of construction drawings and specifications, and carrying out structural inspections primarily for rehabilitation and upgrades to water retaining structures, hydroelectric facilities and new hydroelectric developments in Canada and the USA. You will work on assigned projects under the guidance of Senior Engineers and project Managers while collaborating with other engineers and designers of various disciplines. Working in a team environment, you will ensure projects are completed within allotted schedules and budgets, and up to high quality standards.
Candidates can expect to take part in a wide variety of project work including:
- Perform site inspections and condition assessments of existing concrete, steel or timber water retaining and water conveyance structures.
- Remediation and rehabilitation of existing hydroelectric facilities and water retaining and flow control structures.
- Carrying out and reviewing structural design and analysis for dams and hydroelectric facilities (concrete, steel, wood, post tensioning, including finite element analysis)
- Completing concept and preliminary design of structures and associated civil infrastructure for proposed projects. Coordinating input from multiple disciplines in the planning of facilitates and projects.
- Construction Administration and Construction Support including submittal review.
- Preparation and review of deliverables for projects including reports, calculations, drawings and/or specifications.
- Analyzing and interpreting engineering reports, professional journals, technical procedures, code/standards and governmental regulations.
- Preparation of technical reports and various correspondence.
- Keeping the project team and department managers advised of work progress, challenges and issues.
- Lead preparation of proposals.
- Participating in mentorship and professional development.
- Coordinating with external consultants, vendors as required to ensure smooth project delivery.
- Helping to maintain strong relationships with clients.
About You
To fill the role, we’re looking for an applicant to bring forward a good mix of qualifications and previous experiences. Some highlights could include:
- Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering specializing in structural design from a recognized university. (Master’s degree or PhD is an asset but not required)
- A strong working knowledge of water resource engineering, hydrology and hydraulic design is considered an asset.
- Currently Licensed as a Professional Engineer within Canada.
- 5-10 years of relevant experience required, preferably in an engineering consulting environment.
- Experience in the water resource and hydroelectric field with heavy civil projects, including water retaining structures and flood control structures, and knowledge of the Canadian Dam Association (CDA) Dam Safety Guidelines is required.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Availability to periodically travel to project sites on an as required basis for site visits, typically for data collection, review of construction or attendance at coordination or design review meetings.
- Proficiency with Finite Element Analysis software such as STAAD.Pro, SAP2000, Ansys, or SFrame.
- Working knowledge of AutoCAD , other drafting tools and Mathcad.
- Strong proficiency in Windows and Microsoft Office (excel, word, PowerPoint).
- Highly proactive with exceptional problem solving/analytical skills.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license and the ability/willingness to undergo security clearance checks.
- Location in Winnipeg and regular attendance at the office is preferred but is not a barrier to application. Remote work and flexible work options are available depending on the candidate.
- Proficiency in both French and English is an asset.
