The Role
We are seeking applicants for Intermediate to Senior Level Structural Engineer roles in our office with experience in structural design to support our ever growing team! An Ideal candidate would have experience in designing water retaining structures, structural steel, reinforced concrete design, mass concrete and unique structural analysis. Experience with structural design of other heavy civil concrete and steel components for industrial or mining could also be an asset. The successful candidate will gain valuable experience in the planning and design of multi-discipline hydroelectric or water resource projects with a focus on structural aspects, working alongside a group of skilled and experienced senior engineers.
The technical work includes working on feasibility studies, engineering designs, preparation of construction drawings and specifications, and carrying out structural inspections for rehabilitation and upgrades to water retaining structures, hydroelectric facilities and new hydroelectric developments in Canada, the USA, and abroad. You will work on projects while collaborating with project managers, other engineers and designers of various disciplines on behalf of owners, utilities, and contractors.
This position provides broad support across the company and may be considered for a remote arrangement. While remote work is possible, preference will be given to candidates located near one of our Canadian offices to support in-person collaboration and team engagement. (Offices located in BC, SK, MB, and ON.)
Responsibilities include
- Carrying out structural analysis and design for various structures Including dams, spillways, generating stations, and associated major structural elements. This Includes complete structural steel and concrete design, as well as design related to flow control equipment such as gates, hoists, cranes, log lifters and trash racks
- Managing and supporting the structural design of multi-discipline projects from the proposal stage through to completion, including supporting budgeting and scheduling of the projects.
- Working on multi-discipline project teams with Geotechnical, Hydraulics and Hydrology, Mechanical and Electrical staff undertaking a broad range of design and study projects.
- Performing structural inspections, investigations and field reviews.
- Participating in mentorship and professional development.
- Providing construction support and contract administration services including reviewing shop drawings and contractor’s submittals.
- Playing a role (along with all staff) in our mentorship programs, as an intermediate to senior member of our hydro-structural team, you’ll also mentor junior staff and manage support personnel including designers, technologists and CAD technicians as required.
About You
- Minimum of a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering specializing in structural design from a recognized university (Master’s or PhD degree is considered an asset).
- Typically 5-9 years of structural experience for the Intermediate positions and 10+ for a senior structural engineer. Position selection will typically be based on level of, and applicability of experience.
- Experience in structural engineering with demonstrated technical skills and design experience (analysis, code and regulations reviews, design calculations, technical report writing, drawing preparation) and project management skills (writing project progress reports, tracking budgets and maintaining schedules).
- Experience in the water resource and hydroelectric field with heavy civil projects, including water retaining structures and flood control structures, and knowledge of the Canadian Dam Association (CDA) Dam Safety Guidelines is an asset. Industrial or mining related structural design also considered an asset. Must be registered or eligible for registration as a Professional Engineer in Manitoba (Registration in other Canadian provinces or US states would be an additional asset).
- Availability to periodically travel to project sites on an as required basis for site visits, typically for data collection, review of construction or attendance at coordination or design review meetings.
- Ability to adapt to and meet the challenges of a variety of different projects from clients in many different industries.
- Highly proactive with exceptional problem solving/analytical skills.
- Strong proficiency in Windows Microsoft Office. Experience with structural analysis and design software is considered an asset.
- Excellent oral & written communication skills in English. Proficiency in French in a technical setting considered an asset.
- Able to support a team in the delivery of projects on time, on budget and in accordance with quality objectives.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license and the ability/willingness to undergo security clearance and child/adult abuse checks.
