Hydroelectric dam in large body of water. Water rushing through the spillway.

The Little Long Dam Safety Project increased the Adam Creek Sluiceway’s discharge capacity by over 40% to meet Ontario Power Generation’s updated Inflow Design Flood requirements. The multidisciplinary team applied advanced geotechnical investigations, CFD and physical hydraulic modelling, and innovative structural solutions to design and construct four new sluice bays while keeping existing infrastructure safely in service. The project strengthened climate resilience, reduced environmental impacts such as Lake Sturgeon entrainment, and included significant Indigenous participation. Completed in 2025, it achieved exemplary safety, cost and schedule performance for a complex, high-risk dam safety upgrade, supported by effective collaboration with all partners

Keeyask Generation Station wins for engineering excellence

The Keeyask Generation Station project, led by Hatch with support from KGS Group and AtkinsRealis, recently won an Award of Excellence at the 2025 Canadian Consulting Engineering Awards. This is the country’s highest national mark of recognition in engineering!

This project was a transformative collaboration between Manitoba Hydro and four First Nations—Tataskweyak Cree Nation, War Lake First Nation, York Factory First Nation and Fox Lake Cree Nation. We are proud to have been part of this project and help deliver groundbreaking results.

Together, we have delivered a hydroelectric facility that generates 695 MW of clean energy, meeting critical community needs and supporting Manitoba’s growing energy demands. Located within the ancestral homelands of the partner First Nations, Keeyask is now Manitoba’s fourth-largest generating station, producing an estimated 4,400 GWh annually.

An aerial view of a dam surrounded by a vast body of water and dense forest.

The Little Long Dam Safety Project was a significant initiative by Ontario Power Generation to rehabilitate and enhance the spill capacity at the Adam Creek Sluiceway to meet new dam safety standards. The project aimed to provide an increase of 40% from 6,090 m³/s to achieve an overall discharge capacity of 8,680 m³/s at the Little Long headpond.

There were three main components to the project:

  1. The addition of four new concrete sluiceway bays, providing the additional discharge capacity
  2. The replacement of 10 existing sluice gates, gate hoist systems, and superstructures to improve operational safety and reliability
  3. The installation of an upstream splash wall to protect against wave and debris overtopping
