Choosing Geothermal for KGS Place
When the cooling system at KGS Place, our home office at 865 Waverley, reached the end of its service life, we faced a decision many building owners encounter: replace the existing equipment or invest in a solution better suited for the future.
As engineers who regularly help clients evaluate sustainable building solutions, we approached the challenge the same way we would for any project. We explored the available options, assessed the costs and benefits and followed the data.
The results surprised even us.
While a traditional chiller replacement initially appeared to be the preferred option, our feasibility studies revealed that a full retrofit to an open-loop groundwater cooling system could be achieved for a comparable, and potentially lower, capital cost. At the same time, it offered significant long-term advantages for the building.
The upgrade provides:
- Reduced operating costs
- Lower maintenance requirements
- Improved system reliability
- Extended HVAC system life
- Reduced environmental impact
For us, this project represents more than a successful retrofit. It demonstrates the confidence we have in the solutions we design and recommend for our clients. By applying the same engineering rigor to our own facility, we confirmed that the geothermal-based solution was the right choice for KGS Place.
When it came time to modernize our own building, we chose geothermal because we believed it was the best solution.
